Shelter – Pride Flag

I did this to mostly annoy the hateful / homophobic kids.

Why

As the youths that use the shelter are clearly a hateful little bunch of turds, I thought it would be worth passively aggressively trolling them with something colourful. Homophobia is just one of their range of hateful and ignorant traits, so why not go with a simple bright Pride flag and a caption to go with it?

Some of the hate.

When

October 2017.

Where

On the field opposite my house.

The shelter pride flag location.

Materials / Media

Paper stencil, paints

Production

I think this may have been my first use of a digital cutting machine for anything to do with these projects. It was something stupid like £300 but I was expecting to use it for several other things including aspects of making a Spacesuit (that has been a doomed project since about 2008).

The basic layout on the computer.

Execution

The idea was to stick letters onto a white background and paint over them, but it was a pain in the arse.

Notes

I had to buy spray paints especially for this but it might have been false economy because you get more coverage out of tins of paint even if they are about £12 a for a small tin. And paint in tins rather than sprays is quicker to apply and is more even.
I deliberated over making this “LGBTQ”, but I still wan’t sure which was in dominant preferred use at the time. I’d add the “Q” now though.

Duration & Fate

The flag has been painted twice and repaired a couple of times too, even if the wording was obliterated relatively early on. I’m surprised greater damage hasn’t been done to it by October 2020 though.

I painted over all but a strip of colours on the left hand side in April 2021.

Time to paint over it.
