Arse Sign

The “Arse” sign on tour in Leeds City Centre

Why

A combination of having retrieved an abandoned sign from some undergrowth and liking the “Transport” font we use on UK road-signs. I had to subvert a normal sign though and a short funny rude word like “Arse” was just perfect.

When

About 2001, I think, with some work done on potential alternatives about 2008.

Where

At home but I took it on tour round Leeds for some silly photos.

Materials / Media

Road sign, Gloss paint

Production/Execution

A made a stencil and made a poor job of hand painting the letters onto the whited out sign. I should have stuck letters on, but I figured paint would be more correct and permanent.

Notes

I made another that said “Sorry” and had plans for several others but only made one more, but found another sign and prepared it to be used but never got round to it.

A poor photo of the “sorry” sign.

Duration & Fate

I still have it but the sign isn’t attached to the stand because of corrosion. I could leave it somewhere busy, but it would be better if I could observe reactions to it for a while maybe.
