“Ste’s” Sign

“Ste’s” Sign.

Why

I had a house party in 1993 and I made this sign to help my friends find my house and it was only ever meant to be very temporary for a few hours.

When

Some time in 1993.

Where

At the end of the road I loved on at the time.

“Ste’s” sign location.

Materials / Media

Some discarded yellow plastic from the video shop I worked in and some paint.

Production

This was well before I had access to a computer capable of doing decent graphics on and even if I’d had one, I wouldn’t have had a chance of getting the correct font I needed. To get round this I went on night in the middle of the night to get rubbings of the slightly raised lettering on real signs that I could then use to trace and redraw. and then paint. There’s a couple of slightly dodgy lines on it, but it stands up reasonably well.

Execution

It was only stuck on with gaffer tape or something rubbish and there was a risk of someone wrecking or removing it. Fortunately though, it did last long enough for my guests to arrive.

Wide shot of sign in place.

Notes

It wouldn’t have lasted so long if I’d stuck lettering on, so I’m pleased I painted it, even if it’s not spot on.

Duration & Fate

I still have it now and it usually lives in an obscure part of my garage.

Still the same in 2020.
