“Scrotum” Sign

The Scrotum sign

Why

These aren’t the normal roadworks signs you see for digging up pavements, but the big ones for motorway works. I’m not entirely sure how I came to think of doing this, but it was just something about re-appropriating the panel on the bottom from indicating “200 yds” or whatever, or something utterly bizarre, irrelevant and funny, but not sweary. “Scrotum” was absolutely perfect.

When

Can’t find records for what year this was, but early to mid-2000s.

Where

Stourton Roundabout/Junction. (Junction 7 of the M621)

Scrotum sign location.

Materials / Media

Paint.

Production

I don’t have the original file for this but nothing unusual. It had to be made using “Transport” or national road sign typeface. Which I think is a is a brilliant font.

Execution

Needed to be measured and painted out on a dry evening. On another night, the lettering was painted on rather than stuck on. This is why it’s straight and well spaced, but you always risk seepage with this sort of approach.

Notes

I hope this amused and confused hundreds of people before it disappeared. It’s a busy junction so it should have achieved that.

Duration & Fate

I can’t remember, but I’m sure it didn’t last anywhere near long enough.
