I logged off my work computer and became redundant.
Over the 26 years I had the job, my role changed many times. I even changed the company I was working for in several different ways, but it was an unbroken period of working with the same employee reference number from June 1999 to October 2025. I started out taking calls for BTCellnet, spent a good few years off the phone and doing correspondence, then finished working for a large outsource company taking calls for an energy company.
So much in my life has changed over that quarter century. There’ve been ups and bigger downs, but the job was a constant.
I’m now going to have a bit of time not even seeking new employment. I don’t know exactly what will be next job-wise, but unfortunately it’s likely to be something that keeps me being a phone-monkey rather than anything creative.
It’ll just feel like annual leave to begin with, but I suspect it won’t take long before I feel like the great unwashed unemployed.
