Garden Pod Furniture

As finished as it ever got.

What

Octagonal garden furniture.

Why

I’d seen some interesting egg shaped dining pods ion a restaurant in Lisbon that I liked.

When

Spring 2019

Inspiration from a restaurant in Portugal.

Development & Progress

Just some of the various plans and dimensions I prepared.
Even a basic start can take some hours.
The seemingly unnecessary slot part was meant for later accommodating the egg shaped parts I never made.

So much cutting and staining of parts.
The Base.
Starting with the seating. I wish I’d realised at this point that it wasn’t going to live up to my expectations.

More basic seating.
Lots of layers of seating staining.
Upper seating parts being added.

Staining lots of seating boards.
Applying the boards.
One section had much more work on it to make a cupboard for a stereo and speakers.

Making a table.
The table was made to work at two heights so the whole pod could be a thing to sit on, or as a table.
Using the pod seating before upholstery was made.

Pinning weather resistant fabric for seating pads.
So much sewing of 12 segments, including zips. Aaarrghhh!
An example of an evening with the furniture.

Current/later Status

I soon realised it was too small, even perhaps for me to use alone. The shape also wasn’t an effective use of space. It was clear to me that spending any more time, effort or money on making the complex egg shaped parts was not going to be worthwhile. I built some alternativbe furniture in 2021, so it was only in use for 2 years.

I did it up and someone expressed an interest in buying it, so I never advertised it. The person never got back to me so it just got put aside in my front garden. I dismantled the parts so to make space for doing some paving in spring 2022 and the parts are now just messily cluttering up the front of my house.
I don’t know if it’s worth reassembling it and re-staining parts to sell it for an optimistic £50, or just burn the thing.

The abandoned state of it in 2022.
