Playground Darwin Fish

The intended design with construction geometry for the playground.

What

A combination of feeling that the disused playground bases could be used as canvasses and creating a fairly simple emblem sometimes eeen on cars that is a retort to the epicapilian jesus fish you see some religious people have on their cars. Instead of a fiosh, or a fish with “Jesus” in it, the fish has evolved legs and shows “Darwin”.

IDEA
WASTED TIME
REVIVAL CHANCE

Why

On the field opposite my house, (where I do most things), there’s been the remnants of  playground in the form of the tarmac pads that the swings, slide and roundabout were on for almost as long as I’ve lived here. It seemed to me that at least one of them could be used as a canvas. I’d been seeing a few Jesus Fish on people’s cars, which are basically notices from people indicating that they’re idiots. I liked another variant that was a sort of response to that religious nonsense with a fish that had legs, to suggest evolution and science, rather than religious creation myths.

When

February 2009

A disused tarmac playground pad.
The site in October 2020, in an area that has been planted with tree saplings and left to grow over.

Development & Progress

I got as far as painting the base and working out some geometry It probably wouldn’t have been difficult to have finished either, even if I’d just made the walking fish.

Preparing the canvas by painting the entire pad one night.

Reason for Abandonment

I can’t remember. It take a lot time and effort to do these things even if they’ seem relatively simple.

Chances of Revival

None. The tarmac pad is more grown over as it is in a newly planted wood. I could still put something on it, but it’s very unlikely.

Legacy

None. I have kicked weeds out of another nearby tarmac pad and I considered painting something like a chess board on it, but that’s not happening either.

Notes

The paint I used wasn’t even masonry paint so it didn’t last long anyway.

Regret

Very little.
